Fire Stations

A steel fire station at the US Army's Fort Buchanan, Puerto Rico

Universal Steel supplied the building system for the fire station at Fort Buchanan, the US Army’s installation in Puerto Rico. Home to Fort Buchanan Fire & Emergency Services, it is essential infrastructure: a building that has to be ready to respond at any time, on an active military base.

The challenge

A fire station is an essential facility, it has to keep working when it is needed most. In Puerto Rico that raises the bar, because any building on the island is engineered for high hurricane wind loads and seismic activity, the very conditions during which emergency services have to stay operational. The building had to meet that standard while serving as a working fire and emergency services station on an active US Army installation.

The solution

Universal Steel engineered and supplied the building system, designed in-house to the wind and seismic requirements that apply in Puerto Rico, then fabricated and shipped from the closest plant. Steel construction suits an essential facility like a fire station: it provides clear bay space for apparatus and a durable, code-compliant structure built for the island’s climate.
