How a steel shop is engineered around your work
The starting point for any shop is the clear-span rigid frame. Primary framing (the main rigid frames) and secondary framing (purlins and girts) carry the loads to the foundation, leaving the interior completely open. From there the build is shaped by use: eave height is set for the tallest equipment, often 14 to 16 feet or more for vehicle lifts and overhead cranes; bay spacing is set for the workflow; and openings are placed for the doors, drive-throughs and dust or fume ventilation the trade requires. What is the best size for a steel shop building?
It depends on the work. A 30x40 or 30x50 suits a hobby shop, a single-bay mechanic shop or a small woodworking shop. A 40x60 is a popular mid-size shop with room for multiple bays and storage, and a 40x80 or larger suits a busy fabrication shop, a multi-bay auto shop or a combined shop and warehouse. Can you put a lift or overhead crane in a metal shop building?
