Alabama has no single statewide building department. The Division of Construction Management adopts the 2021 International Building Code as the State Building Code, but direct state enforcement is limited, so counties and municipalities permit most work and many amend upward. We engineer each frame to the mapped speed and exposure at your site. The values below are published code references, not ratings of what we supply, and the values that govern are always the ones mapped at your address.
- Wind (the dominant load)
- Risk Category II ultimate design wind speed is about 115 mph across north and central Alabama and reaches 154 mph at Mobile, where FEMA puts the ASCE 7-22 figure at 146 mph. Mobile and Baldwin sit in the wind-borne debris region (ASCE 7-16/7-22, IBC).
- Tornado and storm shelters

Do I need a permit for a metal building in Alabama?
In almost all cases yes, and the permit comes from your county or municipality rather than from the state. The Division of Construction Management adopts the 2021 IBC as the State Building Code, but direct state plan review is limited to state owned and state funded projects, schools, hotels and motels, and movie theaters. Local jurisdictions permit everything else and can amend the code to be more stringent than the state base. Are steel buildings safe in Alabama tornadoes and hurricanes?
No building type is tornado proof, and a standard pre-engineered building is not a storm shelter. What an engineered steel frame gives you is a continuous, calculated load path from roof panel to anchor bolt, designed to the wind speed and exposure mapped at your site under the adopted code. Where an ICC 500 rated shelter is required, such as the Group E and emergency service occupancies covered by IBC Section 423, that is a separate designed element and we coordinate around it.
Is it cheaper to build or buy a metal building?
