Alaska codes & weather
Alaska is one of the few states without a statewide residential building code. Commercial work runs on the 2021 International Building Code, adopted by regulation by the State Fire Marshal under 13 AAC 50.020 with all IRC references deleted, while Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and ten other deferred jurisdictions review locally and amend the IBC. The values below are published code references, not ratings of what we supply, and the values that govern are always the ones mapped at your address.

- IBC Table 1608.2 as adopted by Alaska lists ground snow loads of 50 psf at Anchorage/Eagle River, 60 psf at Fairbanks and 160 psf at Valdez, with published Alaska tables spanning roughly 25 to 270 psf statewide (IBC, SEAAK).
- Seismic
- Alaska is the most seismically active state, recording about 11 percent of the world's earthquakes (Alaska Earthquake Center). Anchorage layers mapped Seismically-Induced Ground Failure Zones 1 to 5 onto ASCE 7 design (AMC 23.15.1613.2).

Do I need a building permit for a metal building in Alaska?
Commercial construction generally needs plan review before work starts. That review is handled by the Alaska State Fire Marshal unless your community is one of the thirteen deferred jurisdictions that review locally, a list that includes Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, Kenai, Kodiak, Soldotna, Seward and Palmer. Residential buildings of three units or fewer are exempt from that state plan review, though a borough or city may still require a permit, and parts of the unorganized borough have no local building department at all. How much snow can a metal building hold?
There is no single figure, because a steel building carries whatever its frames were engineered to carry. In Alaska the starting point is the ground snow load published for your location in IBC Table 1608.2, roughly 50 psf at Anchorage, 60 psf at Fairbanks and 160 psf at Valdez, with increases for elevation. Anchorage separately sets a 40 psf minimum flat roof snow load in its own IBC amendments. We engineer the roof to the value that governs at your address rather than to a catalog rating.
Are metal buildings worth it in Alaska?
For most Alaska projects the economics favor a pre-engineered kit. Steel is cut, punched and marked before it ships, so on-site work is bolting rather than fabricating, which matters where the build season is short. The package also moves as a compact, well-defined freight load, which helps when delivery is by barge or long-haul truck. Panel finishes carry a 25 to 40 year finish warranty, and steel does not rot or host insects through a wet Southeast winter.
Does Alaska have a statewide residential building code?
No. The State Fire Marshal adopts the International Building Code by regulation under 13 AAC 50.020, currently the 2021 edition effective October 28, 2022, and that regulation deletes every reference to the International Residential Code. So there is no statewide code for one and two family homes. Residential requirements come instead from your borough or city, or from lender standards such as those used by the Alaska Housing Finance Corporation. Commercial and larger residential buildings still fall under the adopted IBC.
How are metal building kits shipped to Alaska?
Steel ships from the closest plant to your site, typically by truck to a marine terminal and then by barge to Anchorage, Kodiak, Southeast or Western Alaska ports, or overland through Canada on the Alaska Highway for Interior and road-system destinations.
