Canadian structural design is governed by the National Building Code of Canada (NBC 2020), which the provinces and territories adopt or adapt as their own codes, such as the Ontario Building Code, the Quebec Construction Code, the BC Building Code and the National Building Code Alberta Edition. Climatic and seismic design data are set out in NBC Appendix C, in metric units: specified ground snow load (Ss) and rain load (Sr) in kilopascals (kPa), a 1-in-50-year hourly wind pressure in kPa, and seismic values that vary by region. The figures below are the building-code requirements from those sources, given as ranges because they vary by location; they are not a single Universal Steel rating. - the specified ground snow load (Ss) under NBC 2020 Appendix C runs from about 1.0 kPa in southwest British Columbia to roughly 5.5 kPa across the northern interior, with mountain and high-elevation zones higher still; representative city values include Montreal at about 2.6 kPa and St. John's near 2.9 kPa, and engineers treat anything above 4.0 kPa as a high snow load region (source: NBC 2020 Appendix C; Engineers and Geoscientists BC).
