Hawaii codes & weather

Hawaii runs a two-layer system. The state adopts a State Building Code, currently the 2018 IBC and 2018 IRC with Hawaii amendments including the Appendix W wind provisions, and each county then adopts and amends it, so Honolulu, Hawaii, Maui and Kauai counties each permit to their own version. The values below are published code references, not ratings of what we supply, and the values that govern are always the ones mapped at your address.

Appendix W of the Hawaii State Building Code sets basic design wind speeds of 115, 130, 145 and 153 mph for Risk Categories I to IV, and any site at 130 mph or above is a wind-borne debris region (2018 IBC, ASCE 7-16).
Seismic
the state code table assigns Site Class D categories of B on Kauai, D0 on Oahu, Molokai and Lanai, D1 on Maui, D2 across North and South Kohala, Hamakua and North Hilo, and E across the rest of Hawaii County (2018 IRC Table R301.2(4)).
Salt air
Hawaii's high-wind standard grades corrosion protection by distance from the shoreline, with the toughest stainless and hot-dip galvanized specs inside 300 feet and a second tier out to 3,000 feet (ICC 600-2020, Table 504.3(1)).

Hawaii questions

Do I need a permit to build a metal building in Hawaii?

In almost every case, yes. Permits in Hawaii are issued by the county rather than the state, so you apply to Honolulu's Department of Planning and Permitting, Hawaii County Public Works, Maui County or Kauai County depending on where the site sits, and each county adopts and amends the State Building Code on its own schedule. We supply engineered drawings and calculations for the permit set, stamped for the jurisdiction that will review them. On Hawaii Island the USGS lava flow hazard zone a parcel falls in can also affect insurance and financing, even though it does not change the structural design.

How much would it cost to build a 40x60 metal building?

It depends on the design loads mapped at your parcel, the finish and accessory package, and in Hawaii the ocean freight leg as well. A 40x60 engineered for a high basic design wind speed with heavy coastal corrosion detailing is a different building from the same footprint inland on the mainland. Buildings are shipped from the closest plant to your site and then move by ocean container, so the schedule needs to allow for sailing time and port handling alongside the build. Neighbor island projects also need drawings prepared for the specific county that will review them, since each county amends the state code separately.

Can you extend a metal building?

Yes, if it is planned for. In Hawaii it pays to plan it early, because a later addition means a second ocean freight leg and a fresh county review. Tell us at design stage and the endwall is framed as an expandable bay rather than a rigid endwall, so a future extension only needs new columns, rafters and sheeting. Retrofitting an expansion onto a standard endwall is possible but involves reframing, and any addition has to be re-checked against the code edition in force with your county at the time.
