Iowa is a local-adoption state. The Iowa State Building Code adopts the 2015 International Building Code by reference (661 IAC 301.3), but under Iowa Code 103A.10 it governs only where a city or county has adopted it by ordinance, so editions differ from town to town: Cedar Rapids is already on the 2024 IBC and IRC. Do I need a permit to put up a metal building?
In Iowa that depends entirely on your city or county. Under Iowa Code 103A.10 the State Building Code applies only where a local governing body has adopted it by ordinance, so one jurisdiction may require a full permit and plan review while the next has very little process. Assume you need a permit, confirm with the building or zoning office before you order, and ask which code edition they enforce. We supply stamped engineering drawings and foundation reactions for that review.
Do farm buildings in Iowa need a county permit?
Iowa treats farm structures differently from most states. Iowa Code 335.2 says county zoning ordinances do not apply to land, farm houses, farm barns, farm outbuildings or other structures primarily adapted for agricultural use, and a county cannot require an application, approval or fee to establish that exemption. That is a zoning exemption, not a blanket exemption from every rule, and city ordinances and floodplain regulations can still apply. Check with your county zoning office before you assume a machine shed is exempt.
